A man has admitted to killing his elderly mother by smothering her in her own bed.

Kevin Pearce, a 59-year-old full-time carer, attacked 89-year-old Eileen Pearce at their home in Bexleyheath, southeast London, in June 2021.

He was previously accused of murder but denied the charge, stating that he caused her death but had no memory of doing it.

Prosecutors accepted a charge of manslaughter by diminished responsibility after psychiatric reports on his mental state were completed.

Pearce pleaded guilty to the charge on Friday and was granted bail ahead of a sentencing hearing early next year.

Prosecutor Michelle Nelson KC said: ‘In the circumstances and a review, the CPS think it’s appropriate to accept the plea.’
