Three Simple Ways to Achieve Better Balance in Your Golf Swing
It isn’t much of a secret that good balance is important in the golf swing. When you are able to remain in balance from the start of your swing all the way through impact, your chance of hitting a good shot go up considerably. While practicing your balance might not be the most exciting thing you can do at the golf course, it just might be the best way to spend your time. Improve your balance, and you can expect the rest of your game to quickly get better as well.
If you would like to work on your balance but don’t know where to start, considering using the three simple tips below.
- Don’t swing so hard. This might be an obvious point, but it is one that you can’t hear often enough. When you struggle to keep your balance during the golf swing, there is a good chance that you are swinging too hard to begin with. Swinging harder than you can do comfortably is a bad idea, and any distance you might gain will be wasted when you hit the ball all over the course. Allow your balance to dictate how hard you swing, and don’t push it past the point where you start to fall off balance.
- Start off balanced. Many golfers who have trouble staying on balance get off to a bad start by having poor balance in their address position. You should be standing over the ball comfortably with your weight evenly distributed between your feet. Also, having a slight flex in your knees will help you hold your balance even as you make an aggressive swing down through the ball.
- Don’t sway. The most common swing fault that leads to poor balance is swaying away from the target during the backswing. As the clubs moves away from the ball during your takeaway, make sure your weight doesn’t drift back along with it. When this happens, you will get your weight too far onto your back foot and you might not be able to recover before you reach impact. Focus on maintaining your center of gravity right in the middle of your feet during the backswing so you can make a balanced downswing without having to compensate for the mistakes made earlier in the takeaway. Think about making a rotational swing instead of a lateral one, and you should be on the right track.
