When is Black Friday?

With the festive season in full swing, shoppers are once again asking themselves the age-old question of how much they should spend on their partner.

It’s fair to say that some partners have an affinity for the finer things in life, which can make Christmas a very costly time of year.

From gadgets and gizmos for the tech lovers, to luxurious beauty products for those who love to pamper themselves at home, Christmas gift wish lists can be very long and set you back hundreds of pounds.

The results of a study looking into this exact conundrum has shed some light on how much you should spend on your partner by revealing the UK average.

CouponBirds, the website shoppers use to find coupons, surveyed 2,000 adults to discover how much cash they splash on their partners when buying Christmas presents. 

The survey found that on average, respondents spent £144.37 on gifts for their partners, which is £15 less than the amount participants said they spent on their close family members (£128.49).

Men were far more likely to spend more, with an average spend of £178.81, compared to women who spent £125.77 on average. 

Anyone who has ever purchased cosmetic products will know just how pricey it is to stock up on makeup, skincare, perfume and other typically ‘femme’ items, that’s before taking into account the exclusive festive versions.

People aged between 35-44 were most likely to spend the most, with this age bracket averaging £165.71.

Meanwhile, 18-24 year olds, with the least spending power, averaged lowest at £105.22. However, across all age groups, 2% were prepared to spend over £400.

When asked what they expect in return, on average, the survey highlighted that respondents expected their partner to spend £137.66, around £10 less than they would spend themselves.

One thing we always hear around Christmas when gift-giving is at an all time high is that “it’s the thought that counts”. After taking part in the study, 75% agreed that more meaningful gifts are more important than the money spent on them, with 38% strongly agreeing.

With temperatures dropping across the country as we inch closer to Christmas, Lidl’s viral heated clothes rack is on sale once again to help shoppers dry their garments in no time.

Finding a way to dry apparel after hauling it out of the washing machine can be a hassle, especially if you’re trying to reduce your energy costs this winter by limiting how long your heating is turned on.

Perhaps you don’t have a tumble dryer at home and your regular clothes rack simply isn’t cutting it.

There’s a long list of heated clothes racks on the market albeit with a hefty price tag. Adding one to your virtual shopping basket could set you back somewhere between £40 to £200.

The budget supermarket has a much cheaper option on sale, which is priced under £40. Lidl is now selling its Addis 12m Heated Wing Clothes Airer in store for only £34. If previous years are anything to go by, it’s set to be highly in-demand once again this winter.

According to Lidl’s website, the heated airer uses less energy than a tumble dryer and it dries laundry quicker than a conventional indoor airer. It costs around 7p an hour to run, meanwhile, a tumble dryer costs on average 85p per hour, giving money savvy shoppers a 92% saving.

It has fold-out wings to create a drying space of 12m and can hold 10kg of your soggy clothes and underwear.

The laundry gadget is lightweight, durable, and can be folded away too, so it involves minimal effort and fuss.

What is Black Friday?

As briefly mentioned above, Black Friday is an American tradition that starts after Thanksgiving and originated as a one-day event, but now spans over the entire weekend – at the end of November.

It usually starts on the last Friday of the month and continues over to Monday, which is also known as Cyber Monday.

It gives shoppers looking for a bargain the perfect chance to purchase presents for loved ones and pop an item in their baskets for themselves – but at a lower price than usual.

What’s the difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday?

To be honest? Not that much, but the super sale starts on the Friday – with deals taking place over the weekend, and finishing online (only) Monday.

Historically the best deals for tech items and your traditional home appliances are best on the Friday, whereas smaller items like fashion, beauty and toys are at, sometimes, the lowest price on Monday. It’s also worth noting that as the name suggests, Cyber Monday is only online – so you won’t be able to shop anything else in stores.

So if you’re looking for a new TV, fridge-freezer or just a beauty gift set it might be worth making a note about that, especially if you have multiple people to buy for.

Best shopping tips for Black Friday?

As tempting as it might be, it’s worth having an idea in mind of what you actually need and want.

Sure, a new pair of shoes, brand new TV and juicer might be splurges you want to purchase – but maybe write down the people you need to buy for, create a budget and look at places that historically are on sale.

It’s also really handy to create a ‘wishlist’ of items you’ve perhaps had your eye on, and see if the price finally goes down over the shopping weekend.

Sainsbury’s has brought back a popular loyalty scheme just in time for Christmas.

Some Sainsbury’s Nectar card holders will be able to double up their points under the latest offer — but you’ll need to be quick as the offer ends Friday. 

The UK supermarket scrapped its annual Double Up offer in 2021, to many customer’s dismay. 

But now the supermarket is trialling a very similar scheme under a new name: Points Power Up. 

Nectar points are worth 0.5p each, meaning that earning 2,000 points can get you a tenner to spend in store. 

The new Points Power Up scheme will allow shoppers to double the value of their points — so 2,000 would get them £20 to spend in Sainsbury’s.

However, the trial offer isn’t available to everyone, and it isn’t clear which Nectar customers are eligible.

According to MoneySavingExpert.com, the scheme will be open to more than 100,000 of customer, and you need at least 2,000 points to take part.

The move comes after Sainsbury’s axed its Nectar Connect scheme, which allowed customers to link their bank account to their Nectar card, collecting more points in the process.

More supermarket Christmas saving schemes 

Considering how close we are to Christmas, it’s a shame that the Points Power Up scheme isn’t available to everyone.

That said, there are loads of Christmas saving schemes across supermarkets this year, so be sure to make use of them.

Sainsbury’s Christmas Club Card

Sainsbury’s also runs a Christmas Club Card scheme that allows customers to save for Christmas.

You can save money with this card in-store and online at Sainsbury’s, but, in contrast to most of the other schemes, you can also use the card at Argos (as well as Argos online) and earn a cash bonus.

You must add funds to your card by November 1 to receive the bonus, and the expiration date of the reward will be displayed on your card.

The maximum value you can load onto your card is a whopping £1,975, but you’ll only receive your bonus on the first £500.

Iceland Bonus Card

The Iceland Bonus Card is a simple scheme for saving and spending in Iceland shops. The plan is open all year round and, as such, can be used to spread the cost of Christmas.

Discounts are also available in-store to anyone paying with their bonus card.

The bonus is added automatically within 24 hours of you reaching the target amount but will expire after 24 months from the last date you used your card.

Asda Christmas Savings Card

Asda’s Christmas savings scheme allows customers to earn up to £15 as a cash bonus that is spendable during December. The card will enable you to set up a regular top-up amount or add to the card as and when you can.

You can make in-store or online top-ups until 5pm on November 12. You’ll then receive the bonus by 9am on November 13.

Tesco Christmas Saver Scheme

As a new member of Tesco Clubcard, you have the option to join the Clubcard Christmas Saver program. If you’re already a member, you can also opt in online by going to the ‘voucher schemes’ section.

You can add money to your account by visiting customer service desks in large Tesco stores or the central checkout in Tesco Express stores, and your bonus will be provided in the form of vouchers.

However, it is essential to remember you’ll need to opt in before October 18 to receive your vouchers in November, and while Clubcard vouchers and top-up vouchers are valid for two years – bonus vouchers are only valid for two months.

If you regularly shop at the Co-op, then they are running a saving stamps scheme that can help spread the cost of Christmas this year.

Each stamp costs £1, and once your stamp book is complete, you’ll receive your bonus of £2.

Oppo’s first stab at an Android slab has its sights set squarely on the more affordable end of the scale. But it doesn’t skimp when it comes to visuals on its 10-inch high-res display, or its quality aluminium construction. Performance can’t compete with higher-end rivals, but it multitasks reasonably well, and has a couple of decent 8 and 5-megapixel shooters. Back to the hack, when you consider that a Brita filter is basically a home version of the charcoal-activated industrial filter at the production plant, it starts to make sense.

In a scuffle reminiscent of Joe Lycett’s beef with Hugo Boss, there is a barney brewing between top Champagne producer, Louis Roederer and London-based winery, Renegade.

It’s giving me David and Goliath vibes and I’m here for it, especially as I know how that one went down.

Anyway, get comfortable and grab a glass of bubbly, this one’s a corker.

In one corner we have Renegade, the crafty urban winery based in Walthamstow and founded in 2016, in the other we have Louis Roederer, the top-tier Champagne house founded in 1776.

Roederer is also the producer of the world-renowned, Cristal, aka the £300 Champers first made for Tsar Alexander II with the gold wrapper around the bottle.

Talking of rappers, if you haven’t tasted it, you’ve definitely heard Jay-Z or 50 Cent spitting rhymes about it.

So, what’s the beef?

Renegade produces a £28 sparkling rosé they named ‘Crystal’ after Crystal Lai, a Malaysian fashion student living in Aldgate East at the time, who agreed to have her face and name put on the label in 2018.

In case you’re wondering, it’s nobody you’d know, Renegade names its wines after real-life Londoners – it’s its thing. Though the wine sounds intriguing, made with Croatian grapes and fermented with wild yeast, the name is where things get messy.

Seemingly out of the blue, Roederer’s legal team sent a letter to Warwick Smith, Renegade’s founder, claiming that Renegade’s ‘Crystal’ branding is too similar to ‘Cristal’s’…apart from there being a ‘y’ instead of the ‘I’ in the name.

They’re concerned about the two wines being mistaken for each other by the ‘average consumer’.

Interestingly, the legal letter introduces their client as, ‘a world-famous French wine producer’ that ‘ships over 3.5 million bottles to more than 100 countries’.

Impressive stuff, though bear in mind that Renegade makes around 7,000 bottles of Crystal a year, while Roederer’s team said, ‘the annual average production of bottles of Cristal is between 300,000 to 400,000, with the most expensive bottles costing thousands of pounds’.

With that in mind, Warwick describes himself as feeling baffled on receiving the letter, saying: ‘I fully understand why an established producer like Louis Roederer would want to protect their brands.

‘However, accusing and threatening a small London wine producer who has a product that is a different colour, made from different grapes, in a different country, using a different winemaking technique, with a completely different label and a name that is both spelt and pronounced differently seems a bit ridiculous.

‘Not to mention our wine retails at around £28 and theirs at nearer £300. Honestly, nobody would be confused.’

Conversely, Roederer’s team feels that the alleged similarity is ‘likely to lead the public to be deceived as to the origin, quality and performance of the goods/services you provide, thereby causing damage to our client through reputational harm and loss of trade. Your actions therefore constitute passing off’.

What does Roederer actually want?

For Renegade to ‘immediately cease all use and sales of the mark ‘Crystal’, remove all reference to ‘Crystal’ in [the] range, [and] agree not to use the mark ‘Crystal’ in relation to the sale of any wine in the future.’

Warwick has since sought legal advice and has now pushed back on every aspect of Roederer’s claim saying, ‘we think the allegations have no merit’.

I might just have to taste the two sparkling wines side by side to see how confused they make me. For research purposes, obviously.
